Dr Leblanc is one of the foremost global authorities on corporate governance and board effectiveness. Based in Toronto, Canada, he is an award-winning teacher, researcher and certified management consultant dedicated to studying best practice and identifying the necessary conditions for boards and individual directors to be truly effective.

Professor Leblanc’s PhD work gave him unprecedented access to the boardrooms of some of North America’s most powerful companies enabling him to produce a first-of-its-kind study of 39 boards of directors and board committees and which included interviews with around 200 directors.  His research has now provided directors, shareholders, government regulators and professional advisors to boards with fresh insights into how boards are developing and changing their behaviour. Dr. Leblanc has developed a user-friendly board assessment methodology, ranging from brief consultations to comprehensive reviews.

Dr Leblanc has published many papers and studies and is the co-author of Inside the Boardroom; how boards really work and the coming revolution in corporate governance (John Wiley & Sons - 2005 - with Professor James Gillies). 

A world-respected speaker, he delivers keynote speeches at major international conferences and client seminars around the world.  He also provides briefings and advisory assistance to boards of directors and has advised directors, executives and academics from the US, UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, China and Mexico.  This consultative work has included assessing and offering recommendations for improvement with respect to the effectiveness of boards of directors, board committees (audit, compensation, nominating and governance), chairs of boards, chairs of board committees and Chief Executive Officers.  He regularly advises professional services firms who work with boards, namely law, executive search, accounting and consulting firms.

Richard Leblanc holds a PhD (Schulich/York University), LLM (Osgoode/York University), JD (University of Detroit Mercy), LLB (University of Windsor), BSc, MBA (Toronto). He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and The Law Society in the UK as well as a CMC (Certified Management Consultant).  Dr. Leblanc was chosen to be one of Canada’s “Top 40 under 40” and the first recipient of the Schulich Teaching Award.
